| Southern Striders Athletic Club |
was formed (and Registered officially, with WPA in
1990), by a group of people who believed that speed was not a prerequisite
to running. It started off as a place for the slower runners to
get involved in races and to be accepted as runners by their peers,
not to feel intimidated by the speed merchants as our efforts are
just as noteworthy. We believe that we run for fun — hence our motto.
This still holds true today even though we have some serious athletes
in our midst.
We currently meet at the Club on Tuesday and Thursday (to start
announcements at 6:00pm) and then set off on a training run/walk.
Various distances are covered and the choice is left to the individual.
All distances start out together, and most are merely “short cuts”
on the same route. The Club hosts various disciplines: Running,
Walking (both Competitive and Social) and a Cycling group has been
formed. The Club members are noted for their socialising and the
Pub is frequented by the most serious of the Athletes.
We are often approached by other Clubs to assist with marshaling
or to help at feeding stations. Most of these are for no reward
but we hope you will assist anyway, as we too are helped during
races. |
(mostly referred to as the Marist War Memorial Club). This is the Club with whom we have affiliated in order to use the premises and facilities currently offered by Southern Striders. There are other
groups/clubs also sharing these premises/facilities: Almar Cricket Club, Marist Bowling Club, VOG/B Hockey Club and a Dancing Studio.
The main hall is available for hire for private functions. Ask the barman
for details.
Note: No
headgear of any type may be worn in the Pub.
